WATERSHED: Ma-asin, Iloilo
A Sustainable
Reforestation Project
In 1992, when Governor Arthur Defensor came to Washington, DC, as
guest of the United States Information Agency, he held a briefing with AIM's members to
apprise about the current condition of the Province of Iloilo. The good news was that, a
feasibility study was being done to consider building Iloilo's international airport In
the Municipality of Cabatuan. If this materialized, not only would it create jobs for a
good number of Ilonggos but also would encourage international business between Iloilo and
Foreign countries.
There is however, an ongoing problem that needs to be urgently
addressed. As trees gradually disappear because of illegal logging or due to its natural
cycle, soil erosion ensues. It only takes a couple of days of heavy rain to cause flooding
in heavily populated areas, paralyzing traffic; worse, precipitating health problems
bordering on epidemic-wide proportion.
Governor Defensor asked AIM to be a partner to
this environmental initiative.Association agreed to maintain approximately three hectares
in the municipality of Ma-asin's watershed, where fruit bearing trees will be planted,
maintained to its full growth and act as barriers in soil erosion.
